What Ramadan is NOT All About: A Ramadan Tree

3EF2A571-8F1D-4FEB-BCEC-54EB86CF466CRamadan is coming up soon! Yay! Every year, as the month of Ramadan nears, we get excited; and why shouldn’t we! The month of peace and mercy is almost here! Alhamdulilah.  One thing I’ve been hearing a lot about this year though, which I was confused and saddened about is Ramadan decorations. I’ve been reading about some Muslim businesses that make and sale Ramadan trees and ornaments—yes, kinda like Christmas trees and ornaments. When I first read about this, I was actually shocked.  I mean what?! What the heck is a Ramadan tree? Was my first thought. I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Ok, I understand parents want to get their children excited about Ramadan. I understand parents want their children to be happy that Ramadan is coming.  I understand parents themselves maybe need more excitement and celebration as the month of Ramadan approaches us but buying and putting up Ramadan trees? That’s just doing too much. Ramadan will never be like Christmas and vice versa.

With a clean home and heart, MashaaAllah we’ll be ready for the month of Ramadan.  Ramadan is a month of reflection; it’s a month of worship. Ramadan is a month of striving to do good deeds.  It’s not about some fake tree in the home which might just cause more confusion in children. Leave the trees to who it belongs, the Christians! Actually some say even Christians have no idea about the origins of the Christmas tree.  It could’ve originated from pagans and adopted by Christians. Either way, dear Muslims, don’t lose yourselves in the trivial things.

Our children and us all need to look at Ramadan for what it is: a month to get closer to Allah. Ramadan needs NOT to be welcomed with Christmas trees and ornaments. It needs to be welcomed with a clean heart and good intention. Also, the Hadith below is a a very good reminder and warning regarding this topic:

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you hand span by hand span, cubit by cubit, to the extent that if they entered the hole of a lizard, you will enter it too.” We said, “O Messenger of Allah, do you mean the Jews and the Christians?” He said: “Who else?” –(Bukhari and Muslim)

Ramadan Mubarak!
