Do you always feed your little one with store-bought baby food? Organic baby food can get pretty expensive, but with a little creativity and some basic organic staples from the grocery store like vegetable purees and canned fruits (unsalted and unsweetened of course), mixed with some items from the bulk bins like oats, lentils, and pasta you can make your child nutritious baby food at home that will taste yummy and will be much more inexpensive than purchasing the high dollar jars and pouches found in stores.

Why Does Organic Matter?

I use canned options for these recipes as I do not have much fresh, organic produce where I live. It is, however, important to choose the organic options when possible, especially for babies; because of the conventional method of growing food, there is now more pesticides and chemical residues on all fruits and vegetables which could be harmful to children’s growth and development in the long run. As Muslims we should be steadfast in feeding ourselves and our children food that is not only halaal but also good. Allah says,

O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship. [Al-Baqarah, 2:172]

The great thing about the recipes I will share with you is that you can change them around to suit your babies’ taste buds while giving them a wonderful tasting journey that will allow them to become great eaters as they grow. We all know that these little loves are quite fond of fruits and all things sweet, however giving them veggies should not have to be a battle.

Don’t have time to make home-made baby food?

I know, I know. You are probably thinking about everything else you have to do in a day, how could you possibly do anymore? I literally can whip up any of these recipes during lunch time in between feeding my little love and getting some other basic chores finished. I am talking 30 minutes, once a day and wa-la! Fresh and tasty food that will not leave you scrambling for the applesauce just to get that one spoonful, maybe, of veggies down.

With Ramadan coming up, you can make all of these recipes in just a couple of days and have enough meals to last nearly the entire month. Just pop what you need out of the freezer, let it thaw and breakfast and dinner is served. Have picky toddlers or older children (or husbands, perhaps)? These recipes can be adapted for them too, so the whole family can get their daily dose of veggies, subhan allah!

Here are some great dinner and breakfast baby food recipes you can make at home!

Delicious Dinner Recipes

Very Yummy Veggie Pasta

Ingredients:

15 ounces of Sweet Potatoe Puree

15 ounces of Butternut Squash Puree

1 small can of Tomato Paste

¼ cup of Carrot Juice

1 teaspoon of dried Basil

1 very small clove of garlic, finely minced

1 cup of Veggie pasta (I suggest a carrot, spinach, and beet mix)

1 small handful of mozzerella cheese, for extra protein optional

Bring water to a boil in saucepan and add the pasta. Allow the pasta to cook until it become soft enough to squish between your fingers. Allow the pasta to sit for 10-15 minutes to soak up the some of the extra water.

While the pasta is cooking and soaking, add the remaining ingredients to a pot and allow to cook until it begins to simmer, stirring occasionally. Cook for 10-15 minutes. Drain the water from the pasta and add the pasta to the sauce and stir in. Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature until it is cool enough to touch with your hands.

With clean hands, mix the pasta and the sauce, and cheese if you are using, and squish the noodles with your hands until all of the noodles have broken apart and have integrated into the sauce. You can also use a hand or electronic mixer or food processor, depending on how fine of a texture you need.

This recipe makes about 7, 6 ounce servings and is appropriate for babies who are able to gum food,  I would suggest 8 months or older.

Lovie Lentils & Punkins

Ingredients:

15 ounces of Pumpkin Puree

15 ounces of Peas

10 ounces of unsweetened Applesauce

½ cup of unsweetened Coconut Water

½ cup of Lentils

¼ cup of plain yogurt optional

Cook the Lentils by bringing the water to a rapid simmer over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to maintain a very gentle simmer. You should only see a few small bubbles and some slight movement in the lentils. Cook, uncovered, for 20-30 minutes. Add water as needed to make sure the lentils are just barely covered.

While the lentils cook, combine the pumpkin and peas in a pot and allow to cook until hot and well combined. When the lentil reach a mushy consistency, add lentils, applesauce, coconut water, and yogurt if using to the remaining mixture and stir well until an even consistency is achieved.

This recipe makes about 8, 6 ounce servings and is appropriate for babies 7 months and older.

Sweet Southwestee

Ingredients:

15 ounces of Butternut Squash

15 ounces of Black Beans

½ cup fresh mango

¼ cup of Diced Bell Pepper

1 Avocado, halved and peeled

Small handful of fresh Cilantro

Cook the black beans until soft. While that is cooking, combine squash and bell pepper in a saucepan and cook until the peppers are soft and remove from heat. Add the beans to the cooked veggies and allow to cool. Add cilantro, avocado, and mango to the mixture and mix with a hand or electric beater, or use a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

This makes about 6, 6 ounce servings and is suitable for babies who can chew food with gums, so about 8 months and older.

Brilliant Breakfast Recipes

My Apply Cinnapots

Ingredients: 

23 ounces of unsweetened Applesauce

15 ounces of Sweet Potatoe Puree

¼ teaspoon of Cinnamon Powder

Mix together the sweet potatoes and applesauce and add cinnamon little by little, tasting to ensure it is not to spicy. Serve this with a tablespoon of Quick Cook Rolled oats that are mushy.

This recipe makes about 7, 6 ounce servings and apropriate for babies who are able to gum food well, probably older than 8 months.

Peachie Green

Ingredients: 

1 can of unsweetened Peaches

1 can of Pears

½ cup cooked of Peas

½ cup of cooked Spinach

1 cup of Plain Yogurt

Drain the **excess from the peaches, pears, peas and spinach and mix with a hand or electric mixer or puree with a blender or food processor. Stir in yogurt. You can serve this with a little oatmeal or by itself.

**Use the excess fruit juice with a banana and some fresh or frozen fruit to create a smoothie for yourself!

This makes about 6, 6 ounce servings.

Banana-Berry Delight

Ingredients: 

3 ripe Banana’s

1 cup of Blueberries

1 cup of Purple Carrots

½ cup of beets

¼ cup of unsweetened Apple Juice

½ cup Quinoa

Add Quinoa to 1 cup of water. Bring quinoa and liquid to a boil in a medium saucepan. Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer until tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, 15 to 20 minutes. Fluff with a fork.

To make fruit mixture, cook beets and purple carrots until very soft and mushy. Allow to cool and add bananas and blueberries and apple juice. Mix with a hand or electric mixture or use a blender or food processor to puree. Stir in Quinoa.

Safe Storing Tips

You can easily store leftovers by portioning out each and saving in small freezer containers, ice cube trays with covers, or small and BPA free plastic baggies stored in a large freezer bag.
